Discarded rubber tires getting new life through recycling isn’t news anymore, but when the use is ingenious and inexpensive and the results are handsome and durable, attention must be paid. So it is with RUBBiSH, the recycled rubber products designed under the name mnm|MOD by architects Erla Dögg Ingjaldsdóttir and Tryggvi Thorssteinson, the masterminds at MINARC, (the firm also won Project of the Year and grand awards for the kitchen and master bath at Appleton Living). At Superb-A House in Venice, Calif., both the bathroom sink and the kitchen stools are made of RUBBiSH. The chairs provide comfortable kitchen island seating and tuck away neatly when not in use, because the chairs’ back panels double as front panels for the island. The bathroom sink, incredibly, weighs under a pound; it stands up to hard use and it too can be recycled at the end of its life. Stools and sink made of RUBBiSH sounds like anything but.
