Built for a New York City family’s move to the suburbs, the Cedar House in Westchester, N.Y., is a modern home that balances crisp forms with natural materials. Brooklyn, New York–based Thread Collective, a multidisciplinary practice that specializes in architecture, landscape, and sustainability, designed the 5,000-square-foot home to create generous space for family time, along with areas for quiet retreat.
In the home’s basement, a wood platform stair connects the lower level with the main living on the first floor. Due to its location near the garage and mudroom, the wider steps to the right of the staircase provide a convenient place to sit for both children and adults to put on—or take off—wet boots and shoes.
With most of the living spaces on the first floor integrated into a single, open plan and visible from a bridge on the second floor, the space also offers a semi-hidden refuge for reading or lounging, says the firm. Plus, the design team chose to incorporate an open stair above to ensure that the expansive windows at the front façade bring some natural light down to illuminate the area.
