With the popularity of tiny homes and backyard guest dwellings rising, the men and women at Pennsylvania-based custom home builder Rotelle Studio(e) competed in a battle of the sexes to build the ultimate he and she sheds.

The building for the He vs. She Shed Shindig competition took place over the summer weeks and each team recently revealed their shed designs during the company’s second annual Dream BIG Custom Home Event. Ty Pennington, of “Trading Spaces,” was there to help with the reveal to a crowd of more than 450 attendees.

The home event kicked off the online voting to determine the winning shed. Individuals who vote will be entered into a raffle to win the she shed. The he shed is being auctioned off online with 100% of proceeds benefiting Ashley Addiction Treatment, a Maryland-based treatment center.

President and owner Peter Rotelle led the men’s team for the he shed’s design with chief operating officer Anthony Holowsko and senior project manager Ken Zimmerman. The men used raw lumber to construct their shed and incorporated repurposed antique finds, such as a Ford pickup truck lighting feature, a tool chest coffee and bar station, and an old gas pump faucet. Other design elements included a back wall that drops to create a deck, a glass garage door, and an elevated dog bed.

For the she shed, chief designer Renée Pratt, chief architect Heather Ryan, and design consultant Emily Wisler used a lighter palette and added a retractable roof to their shed. It opens to allow more natural light into the space and provides cover over a side deck. A hammock-like day bed is suspended from a crossbeam for seating, wall built-ins add storage, and a serving counter hides a cooler.
