For this kitchen remodel, the challenge was making adjacent areas—dining room, sitting room, kitchen, staircase—all relate to each other while maximizing the spectacular beach views. The house gets light on all sides; tracking the sun throughout the day is one of the greatest pleasures of being here. Two parallel 10-foot work islands front the cooking space, and the entire living area is in the cook’s line of sight. The kitchen is a workhorse, to be sure, but because it’s completely exposed, simple and elegant finishing is also key. White lacquered cabinets, polished concrete countertops, and deluxe stainless appliances do the trick nicely, while sliding glass doors and an oversized pocket door to the left of the fridge help blur the line between indoors and out, making this consummate entertaining kitchen the focal point of a beach house that’s a heavenly place to be.
