The V Residence's outdoor living space was designed for year-round use in Reno.

Located at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Reno, Nevada, the V Residence—by local firms Architectural Design Group and Altmann Builders—was conceptualized around views and sustainability. The clients requested an interpretation of an older Nevada ranch-style that “appeared to rupture from the harsh landscape with a humble entry” and promoted “longevity, sustainability, and low maintenance.”

On the south side of the 5,752-square-foot residence, the home’s sleek concrete patio was designed to take in the mountain views and create outdoor living space for year-round use. In the summer months, the owners can enjoy their time relaxing by the pool and spa, while the adjacent sunken fire pit can be utilized when it’s chilly.

Instead of adding a patio-level fire pit, the design team chose to sink the space in order to mirror the clean lines of the pool and to help create a wind break and protect the area from the prevailing Sierra winds. After three concrete steps down, users can sit on the perimeter steel benches—constructed from the same material as the deck railing—and huddle around the circular gas fire for warmth.
