In the late 1960s, architect Ken Bonner built the first detached, single-family house in Reston, Virginia, a town located 20-some miles west of Washington, D.C. The owners of one of Bonner’s designs recently decided to reinvest in their 50-plus-year-old house and hired local firm Evolution Design + Build to modernize the kitchen and master bath with designs that paid homage to the home’s mid-century roots.
The overall footprint of the 2,800-square-foot home remains unchanged, but the kitchen was reoriented to maximize storage and counter space. As for the design details, the team created custom walnut cabinets that would complement the clerestory windows—a hallmark trait of Bonner properties—and the home’s wood beams.
The team also incorporated a unique cement tile backsplash, and the client selected a bright orange Smeg range hood as the kitchen’s focal point. The Italian appliance manufacturer offers its Portofino chimney hoods in two sizes, 36 and 48 inches. Available in a variety of colors, both sizes have integrated lights, four speed levels, and a maximum extraction power of 600 CFM.
