In a recent survey of home buyers by the National Association of Landscape Professionals, 82% of Millennials reported that having a lawn is their most important consideration when renting a buying a home – more than an updated kitchen or smart home technology.

When asked about their decision to buy a home based on the size of its yard, new home buyers Allie and Jared Tunley cited “the Millennial trend toward self-sufficiency” as an influential factor.

"We wanted room for a garden, where we can grow our own vegetables, and room for pets and solar panels," [Allie Tunley] says. "We also wanted a place where everyone can stretch out and enjoy each other, and where our kids can learn the value of hard work—we don't want them inside playing computer games all the time."

Out of the full pool of respondents, 81% reported having a lawn and 77% considered the lawn the most important feature. Almost half of respondents said they entertained in their yards at least once a month, and 77% reported relaxing there at least once a week.
