Occupying a full floor of a 19th-century warehouse building, this apartment remodel achieves a combination of openness and privacy that is rare in urban lofts. Slender islands of walnut-veneered millwork provide storage and define functional areas while maximizing the impression of spaciousness and channeling access to natural light. “You always get a sense of the whole unit,” notes Aniket Shahane. “You get light from two sides, you get air from two sides.” Strategic management of sight lines allows rooms at the perimeter to share light with the central living spaces. “When you look toward the bedroom window,” Shahane says, “you only see the window.” Exposed steel columns and timber beams reflect the building’s utilitarian origins. Their forms echo in the millwork islands’ cantilevered bases. Our jury called the result “a fresh take on the loft ... industrial with finesse.”
