The judges loved the way this Los Angeles residence handles natural light. “The use of light as a form-giver here is very dramatic and interesting,” said one juror. Architect Zoltan E. Pali gathered the home’s simple rectilinear shapes around a south-facing courtyard and pool. Nearly all of the walls on the courtyard side are glass, allowing Southern California’s abundant sunshine to illuminate the interiors through much of the day. A beautifully textured travertine wall edges the north side of the main living space and is constantly washed with light from an unobtrusively placed skylight. “We wanted to bring light in from the top,” Pali explains.
