Standing stately against the landscape of Big Sky, Montana, the Modern Meets Mountains home is inspired by the peaks that surround it. Composed of board-formed concrete and Corten steel, the home’s entrance seems carved out of stone embracing the rugged terrain and boulders nearby. Square glass cutouts on the steel front door let light seep into the home while the sculptural door handle adds additional detail.

Built by Charter Custom Homes and designed by Stuart Silk Architects, the home’s great room features 16-foot-high, floor-to-ceiling windows. The project’s application reads, “Warm-toned concrete floors and a blackened stainless steel stair railing carry the exterior design into the interior for a seamless design aesthetic, and a continuous band of clerestory windows in the living room floods the home with light from four sides.”

The kitchen and bathrooms are finished in varying warm materials that bring depth and sophistication to the space. White stone countertops add chic contrast to both the kitchen and primary suite. One juror shares, “I like the overall darker palette here and how it blends into the landscape. It just feels grounded.”

Two different ceiling heights nod to the mountain skyline in view. Outside, living areas of varying levels provide numerous places to lounge and gather among the evergreens. A grand fire pit and a hot tub offer warmth after a day of skiing.
