On PBS’s ongoing series “Chasing the Dream,” architecture students from Auburn University’s Rural Studio Program were highlighted for their work building homes for local residents. Established in 1993, the program has students and faculty work, study, and live in Hale County, Alabama, as they design and construct homes that cost only $20,000 to build. Together, they have built more than two dozen one-bedroom houses that are roughly 500 square feet.

Although one of the program’s main goals is to provide a home to residents who have never had their own single-family residence, the other focus is to train a new generation of architects and give them hands-on experience working with an underserved community in the heart of the south.
