Affordable Housing Competition Winner Has Holistic Approach

A Yale team won first place in the 2020 Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition hosted by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The best minds need to collaborate on approaches to a dire situation in this country - the need for more affordable housing. Yale students created an approach that received recognition from US HUD and is portrayed here in video and photos.

A team of Yale students has won first place in the 2020 Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition hosted by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The winning proposal, submitted by students Helen Farley (M.Arch ‘20), Kelley Johnson (M.Arch '20), Eva Leung (MBA '21), and Jackson Lindsay (M.Arch '20), is situated in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The project is a mixed-use and mixed-income community focusing on young families, particularly women and children. The proposal seeks to connect to the surrounding area and Santa Fe at large and promote resilient communities through paying homage to the vernacular Pueblos, bringing together residents through communal spaces at a variety of scales, passive environmental systems, and a lease to limited equity co-operative model.

The award was announced via Zoom on April 16 following final presentations by four competing teams.
