New York City’s Build it Back program is putting the finishing touches on 19 new homes at Stanton Court in the waterfront community of Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The new homes will replace those devastated six years ago in Hurricane Sandy, and feature advanced storm-proofing characteristics, including elevated foundations and modern drainage systems. The homes will be move-in ready by the end of the year.

Sandy left Melissa Haggerty's home underwater and her life upside-down. "We didn't have a sewer system, so what happened was it was like a bathtub where the water came," she recalls. "It filled up 8 feet but didn't go back out with the outgoing tide." Haggerty says she can't wait to move into her new home by the end of the year.

The Build it Back project is one of several rebuilding projects still in progress in the hard-hit waterfront neighborhood, funded by federal recovery grants.
