The total number of single-family permits issued nationwide throughout January 2018 reached 61,767, a 15.1% increase over the January 2017 level. These results are similar to the Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction data, which found single-family permits were up to 61,000 and 14% ahead of their level last January, NAHB’s Eye on Housing reports.
Between January 2017 to January 2018, 32 states and the District of Columbia saw growth in single-family permits issued. Twenty states recorded a growth above 15.1% but 18 states had a decline in growth. Idaho had the highest growth rate during this time at 101.6% while single-family permits New Hampshire declined by 43.1%.
Texas led the single-family sector with 10,119 permits issued while Florida followed with 7,300. The top 10 states accounted for 65% of single-family permits issued nationwide. The District of Columbia had the lowest number of single-family permits issued -- 21.
