The days of a family of five sharing a single bathroom are long gone.
As home sizes have grown in the last several decades, so has the average number of bathrooms, reaching nearly three per new home built last year. Last week, Redfin released its analysis of the top cities in the U.S. for numbers of toilets per capita—cities where new homes likely have a lot of bathrooms.
To get a bit more down to business, we decided to take a look at the leading builders in those cities where commodes are a hot commodity. Among builders who have closed at least 500 new homes from the third quarter of 2013 through the second quarter of 2014, Legendary Communities leads with an average of 3.9 bathrooms. After Legendary, Ashton Woods Homes, Highland Homes, and Toll Brothers tie for second with an average of 3.6 bathrooms per new home sold. DR Horton, however, is farther down the list with a national average of 2.7 bathrooms per new home. Washington, D.C., leads as the top state with the highest average number of bathrooms in new homes with 3.3, and New Jersey has the fewest with an average 1.3.
Using data from Metrostudy and Redfin, here are the top 10 cities with the most residential toilets according to Redfin; each city’s leading builders from Metrostudy from the third quarter of 2013 through the second quarter of 2014; and the average number of bathrooms each builder put in a new home sold during that time (where data is available).
