In November 2017, CertainTeed honored four contractors and projects for their excellence in gypsum use at the biennial CertainTeed Gypsum North American Awards, held this year in Austin, Texas.

The North American Trophy Awards are part of the larger Saint-Gobain International Trophy Event, which honors gypsum board design, innovation, craftsmanship and sustainability in residential and commercial uses across the globe. The four award-winning contractors and projects will go on to participate in the International Awards Event, which will take place in Lisbon, Portugal in Spring 2018.

This year, nine nominees from the United States and seven nominees from Canada competed to advance to the International Trophy Awards. The North American winners are:

  • Sears Contract Inc., selected for its work on Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, N.C. The cathedral used multiple CertainTeed gypsum products, including GlasRoc Sheathing and M2Tech, to achieve a unique Romanesque design with vast open spaces and specialized ornamentation.
  • Michael’s Homes, LLC, selected for its work on the River Watch home in Soddy Daisy, Tenn. The 2,900-square foot single-family home utilized AirRenew, SilentFX, Habito and No-Coat products to improve the home’s indoor air quality, limit noise transmission, and ensure durability.
  • Smith Brothers Contracting Corp., selected for its work on the St. Mary & St. Samuel Coptic Orthodox Church in Markham, Ontario. The 32,000-square foot, single-story church required a high level of drywall application skill, given its domes, high ceiling, massive windows, and harsh lighting. Smith Brothers made use of CertainTeed’s Type X, M2Tech, Extreme Abuse, and more.
  • DonMor Drywall, selected for its drywall work on the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre Expansion Phase 1B at the University of Guleph in Guleph, Ontario. The structure includes a fitness center, two gymnasiums, an exercise class room, locker rooms, meeting rooms, a climbing wall and a student lounge.

During the last International Awards Event in 2016, 89 projects from 35 countries competed for 14 international honors. The top international award is the Grand Prix Award, which is given to a project that “exemplifies technical gypsum superiority with stunning visual appeals.” The Phillharmonie de Paris by Ile de France Platerie received the Grand Prix Award in 2016.
