Formaldehyde Scandal Could Have Ripple Effects

1 MIN READ

The Lumber Liquidators case has put the national spotlight on the dangers of unhealthy products.

As reported by CBS’s “60 Minutes”, three independent tests of Lumber Liquidators’ flooring found levels of formaldehyde to be off the charts: The average level in Lumber Liquidators laminate products was over six to seven times above the state standard for the cancer causing chemical.

The media coverage has set off worries about indoor air quality and the health of homes among consumers—some homeowners in California are ripping out their Lumber Liquidators flooring. The flooring retailer insists that its flooring is safe, characterizing the accusations that they are not as attacks driven by short sellers who stood to benefit by driving its stock price down.

Here, BUILDER senior editor Jennifer Goodman goes in depth to explore how the issue could have ripple effects in the home building industry for years to come.
