As Builder went to press, some 45 forest fires initiated by lightning had already raged through more than 100,000 acres in the Canadian province. A milky haze fanned by northern winds delayed some airline traffic as it spread across New England, New York state, and even as far south as Washington. John Quinlan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., reports that "many people have actually begun to smell the smoke in faraway places."
