Well known for its “little old lady” and the tournament of Roses parade, Pasadena, Calif., is less renowned for its nevertheless stunning array of Arts and Crafts architecture and classic bungalows. Around the turn of the 20th century, many of the rich and famous from the East and the Midwest decamped for the winter to Pasadena, a fabulous cold-weather destination. Some of them decided to stay on permanently, building lavish homes along what came to be called Millionaire’s Row. For the design of these homes, many chose a local firm, Greene and Greene, two brothers who emigrated west from Cincinnati. The Greenes learned to work with their hands at The Manual Training School in St. Louis and later went on to MIT to study architecture. Though they designed a variety of styles of homes, their background drew them toward those that offered lots of built-in cabinetry, handcarved woodwork, and other forms of handcrafted details.
