Behind the Numbers:

PulteGroup didn’t see as large a jump in new sales orders as some other publicly held builders have reported. Still, orders were up, and it managed to lose less in this year’s first quarter than last year’s. The land-rich company managed to offset write-offs for deteriorating land values with land sales for the quarter. And its margins are improving as last year’s major cuts to overhead have taken hold.

Pulte’s fiscal year ends Dec. 31
