Port City Comeback

By Carolyn Weber. Known for its port, pulp mills, and manufacturing operations, not many think of Tacoma, Wash., as a place with architectural treasures. But now, as part of a $500-million facelift to revitalize the waterfront and downtown, the city will preserve and restore signature historical industrial buildings. Some of those buildings include the 1906 Stadium High School, the 1916 Greco-Roman-style Pantages Theater, and the copper-domed Union Station, built in 1911. A new museum district, featuring the $79-million Museum of Glass and Dale Chihuly Bridge of Glass, are also part of the renaissance project.
