Artificial intelligence is one of the most talked-about topics in construction right now, and builders are feeling pressure to do something with it, often without clearly understanding how best to incorporate it.
At the same time, new tools launch weekly, promises are everywhere, and the pressure to adopt something to stay ahead of the competition is real.
The problem isn’t access to AI—it’s clarity on what’s actually worth adopting. These four reality checks cut through the noise.
1. AI that wasn’t built for construction won’t work. Much of the AI aimed at builders is general-purpose technology retrofitted for an industry it doesn’t understand. At the same time, many tools are point solutions—good at solving a single problem but siloing information in the process.
“You don’t need one more tool,” says Ruhaab Markas, vice president of product AI for Buildertrend. “What you need is the ability to understand your entire business.”
Markas adds that the many interconnected domains of construction—compliance, engineering, design, project management and budgeting—make it all the more important for AI to be built with those complexities in mind. “Very few fields have that vast array of interconnected domains,” he says.
But a lot of what’s being sold to builders don’t account for those complexities. Instead, they are simply wrappers around existing AI models. “People are just taking Anthropic or OpenAI models anyone can use and putting a fancy UI on top,” Markas says. “The question is: what’s actually proprietary or unique about it?”
That’s why it’s critical to ask potential software partners how their AI connects with existing workflows—and whether it uses that context to solve real construction problems. “Does it actually save my team time,” says Adam Copenhaver, co-founder of CopeGrand Homes, “or did I just create another process I have to manage?”
2. AI works best when it lives where your jobs already live. That means AI needs access to the whole of your business operations—not just a slice of it. The problem with most point solutions is that even when they work well in isolation, they fragment your data across systems, which limits what AI can actually do with it.
“Most of us think we’re using AI because we’ve got ChatGPT or Claude on our phone—asking it questions, checking a code, drafting an email,” says Copenhaver. “But the bigger opportunity is allowing AI to have context from your information. Using AI is easy. Integrating it into your company is the challenge.”
Copenhaver’s experience with AI-powered weekly client updates illustrates what integration looks like in practice. “It’s actually looking at our photos, schedule, messages, selections, and change orders and giving a real update on what happened that week instead of a PM doing that manually,” he says. “It works because the AI is sitting right where our information already lives.”

The flip side is equally instructive. “If your AI isn’t in the location where your information is,” Copenhaver says, “you end up creating extra work around it instead of saving time.”
3. AI can’t fix a broken process—it just speeds it up. There’s an old saying in data science: garbage in, garbage out. The same applies to builders who adopt AI without having the fundamentals in place first—solid SOPs, accurate daily logs, reliable schedules, and budgets. The risk isn’t just that AI underperforms. It’s that a broken process becomes a faster, more expensive broken process.
“AI doesn’t magically fix those things,” says Copenhaver. “It’s meant to be an accentuator of your skills, not a replacement for the fundamentals. It’s a multiplier, not a foundation. If the foundation isn’t right, adding another story to it doesn’t solve the problem.”
Markas says a failure to have fundamentals in place is one of the most common reasons builders come away disappointed. “AI is a very powerful tool, but it’s not going to solve inaccuracies if you’re feeding it inaccurate information,” he says. The builders who get the most out of it treat AI as a reason to get their data house in order, not a shortcut around doing so.
Before adopting any AI tool, identify the real pain point first and make sure the underlying process is worth automating.
4. Winning with AI isn’t about adopting the most tools. Builders getting real value from AI are the ones strategically identifying their pain points and targeting them specifically. Being clear about what AI is good for—and what it isn’t—matters just as much as which tools you choose. “At the end of the day, I don’t want AI to make our business less human,” Copenhaver says. “I want AI to remove enough administrative busywork so that our team has more time to do the things that should be human—walking the job, solving problems, working with trade partners, investing more time with clients.”
Ultimately, the builders who get ahead of AI won’t be the ones who adopted the most tools. They’ll be the ones who understand where it actually helps—and honest about where it doesn’t.
