Project Description

Builder’s Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist

Located in a coastal resort community near Charleston, South Carolina, this three-bedroom weekend home is designed to provide a seaside getaway for an Atlanta family and their friends.
Although the property is relatively small and the neighbors are close by, the site’s location offers beautiful, unobstructed views of natural marshlands to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. To optimize the spectacular views and the natural ocean breezes, the living spaces are located on the top floor and bedrooms on the main floor. Additionally, a unique T shaped plan creates a simple, spatial organization as it provides views, ample daylight and cross ventilation to each room in the house.

Another important aspect of the design is its response to the aesthetic requirements of the resort and its design review board, where historical and traditional designs are of primary importance. To accommodate this preference, two historical precedents from the region were referenced in the development of the design: the Charleston Single House and the Low-country or French Colonial House. The design’s one-room deep plan with flanking porch running from front to back is similar to the Single House concept. French Colonial designs from the 1700’s are recalled in the large roof overhangs, wrap-around porches, repetitive columns and hipped roofs.
