Make no mistake: A commitment to safety needs to come from the top. Employees and trade contractors alike will ignore bosses who give lip service to safety by putting up safety posters and then disregard the need to provide training or equipment. Which is a tragedy—because every week, somewhere in the United States, someone is killed on a home building job. Though the industry has made substantial strides toward safety in recent years, working on new-home construction remains one of the deadliest occupations around.
