Builders and homeowners interested in upping their connected home game can now turn to GE's latest additions to the If This Then That (IFTTT) platform. The new offerings double GE's IFTTT presence from three channels to six, and make GE the first appliance manufacturer to have its entire suite on the platform.
GE says it has been working with IFTTT since June of 2015 to add functionality for users to get more out of their connected GE appliances. The platform works with a variety of mobile apps as ingredients to let users create "recipes" of if-then functions within apps or with other devices in the Internet of Things, such as smart thermostats or lighting. For example, a user could create a recipe with the GeoSpring water heater that says, "if I leave my house, then lower my water heater temperature." IFTTT would use the device's mapping app to identify when the user leaves home to then tell the water heater to reduce its temperature. Other possible recipes could say, "if I turn on the wall oven, then turn on the air conditioner," or "if there's 10 minutes left on the drying cycle, then blink my living room lights."
"It's exciting to see GE Appliances bring their version of a richer, more connected home to life with IFTTT," says Anne Mercogliano, vice president of marketing for IFTTT. "Having their entire suite of smart appliances on the platform creates new connections for the hundreds of existing apps and devices on IFTTT that give power to users to tailor their world to what is important to them."
Today, GE Appliances has more than 400 connected users across its multiple IFTTT channels, resulting in more than 3,000 recipes running each week. The new channel functionality for washer, dryer, and dishwasher units, (added to cooking, refrigeration, and water heating channels) will undoubtedly help those numbers increase by allowing users to connect their appliances to more than 100 applications and connected devices, including Facebook, Twitter, smart lighting, and various other smart home products.
"Having the full suite available on IFTTT allows consumers to stay on top of their home appliances in new ways that are created just for them and their lifestyle," says Brett Luckabaugh, connected appliances scrum master at GE. "With six GE Appliance channels on IFTTT, there are endless possibilities for consumers to create new recipes, giving them more control over their smart home."
