Executives at Beazer Homes unveiled today a nationwide program that sets a new environmental standard for the homes its builds. Under the new eSmart program, every Beazer new-home start will include a handful of environmentally conscious home products as standard items.
The decision to launch the program arguably was a baby step toward true green building. However, it marked a crucial first step toward beginning to "raise the benchmark nationally" for green building, said Tony Callahan, senior vice president of national purchasing and design.
So, here's where Beazer has drawn that line. Starting today, every Beazer division across 19 states will include the following products in every new home it builds at no cost to the buyer:
* GE CFL Light Bulbs
* Honeywell Programmable Thermostat
* GE Energy Star Dishwasher
* Moen Water Saving Fixtures
* MERV 8 Filter
* Low VOC Paint and Carpet
Other companies such as Florida-based ICI Homes and California-based Shea Homes have moved in a similar direction, but Beazer's wider geographic footprint could exert a greater influence in establishing a minimum green standard for new homes.
