Started in 1980, Anderson Homes is one of the Triangle's largest locally owned home builders. In 2004, the company controlled 2 percent of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill market, making it the seventh largest builder.*
Starting on Nov. 1, 2005, Anderson committed to building all of its new homes to exceed energy standards. The move earned the builder recognition as an Energy Star Partner of the Year in March 2006.
Anderson estimates that one of its homes will lower energy costs by about $33 each month, resulting in $400 in energy savings annually and adding $8,000 to value of the home, based on calculations from a recent EPA study.
CEO Dave Servoss says that the decision to go to higher energy efficiency was also part of a strategy to differentiate itself from steep competition which spawned a new sales promotion. Home buyers who purchase and close on an available home between March 15 and May 31 will receive complimentary energy for a full year.
