  • Day 3 at the HPBA Expo: Trendsetting

One priority is maintaining the growth of the sizzling grilling segment. "With state-of-art grills, the latest technology, and must-have accessories, manufacturers are bringing a whole new meaning to grilling," says Leslie Wheeler, director of communications for the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association based in Arlington, Va. "Recognizing consumers' love affair with grilling, the industry is turning out products that create an out-of-this-world barbecue experience, in turn, growing the industry to new heights."

  • Day 2 at the HPBA Expo: Fire Starter

"Despite the slowdown in new-home sales across the country and the unusually warm, early winter weather in some regions, the hearth, patio, and barbecue industry still is enjoying solid sales - with nearly 3 million hearth units shipped last year," says Jack Goldman, president of the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association based in Arlington, Va. Hearth appliances shipments were down 11 percent in 2006 compared to 2005. The segment of the market that saw the decreases was the gas appliances - fireplaces, inserts, stoves, and gas logs - no doubt affected by the rise in natural gas prices.

Distributed audio, mood lighting, and professional-grade kitchen wares notwithstanding, the physical environment is conducive to socializing in every which way—be it a big family holiday dinner, an intimate cocktail hour, or a summer bash with friends.

  • Reality House: Great Outdoors

Outdoor living spaces come standard in balmy Florida, where lounging poolside and dining al fresco are part of everyday life. But in The Reality House, those requisite spaces aren't quite where you'd expect.

    The New American Home 2005

The story of The New American Home 2005 is presented as an "owner's diary" that tracks its progression from a modest move-up family house to a spectacular custom home.

    Light Effects

MANY OF TODAY'S HOME BUYERS are looking for more livable outdoor spaces, especially after the sun sets. But extending outdoor living hours into the night requires illumination.
