REFLECTIVE OF THE HOME BUILDING INDUSTRY'S strong positioning on the national business landscape, several of the country's large production builders peppered this year's annual list of Forbes magazine's Platinum 400 Best Big Companies in America. Among them:
Meritage Corporation ranked No. 1 for five-year annualized total return (out of all 400 companies).
K. Hovnanian ranked No. 5 for five-year annualized total returns (out of all 400 companies).
Standard Pacific, in addition to being named to the list for the fifth consecutive year, also made the magazine's “Turbocharged” list, an honor granted to only 12 companies each year. Turbocharged companies have to have posted growth rates of at least 10 percent over the past five years in both sales and earnings per share.
KB Homes was listed as No. 63 on the Platinum 400 list and also received a nod as one of Forbes' eight “Supercharged” companies. The title “Supercharged” is awarded to those companies expected to increase their performance in the next 12 months by a greater percentage than they had grown in the latest 12 months in earnings per share and sales.
Toll Brothers was named to the Platinum 400 list for the fifth year in a row. In addition, it made the list of 12 Turbocharged companies.
Other builders named to the list include, Beazer Homes USA, DR Horton, Lennar Corp., MDC Holdings, Pulte Homes, Ryland Group, and Technical Olympic USA, Inc., which also made the Turbocharged list.
To qualify, companies needed to have revenue exceeding $1 billion and a ranking in the upper half of one of the 26 industry groups for return on capital, sales growth and earnings growth (according to Forbes composite scoring). Accounting and corporate governance practices are also considered.
