SURFACES 2012 Products: Day 2

Forget drywall. The manufacturer’s Roman Cladding is a concrete wall tile system for a dramatic conversation piece in any house. Available in five modern-style colors, the product has a random repeating pattern that goes together like a puzzle. It can be used for indoor or outdoor applications.

Instead of cutting down perfectly good trees, the manufacturer reclaims and salvages old barn wood and cabinet scraps to make its line of Re-Grained decorative wood tiles. Tiles are available in such species as alder, cherry, hickory, and walnut, and measure 2 inches by 6 inches, 2 inches by 2 inches, and 4 inches by 4 inches.

Unlike many interior wall claddings, FriendlyWall panels are made from solid hardwood to give rooms a warm, contemporary look. The panels are designed with an innovative interlocking system that fits together and can be installed within hours. The product shown here is walnut.

The 3iE is a smart, programmable thermostat that’s specifically designed for in-floor electric radiant-heated floors. Featuring a low profile and a sleek touchscreen, it is the only thermostat with active energy management, the company says, and automatically adjusts to changing conditions in your room, your home, and the seasons.

Hydro Ban is the latest entry in the linear drain category. The "trench drain" is specifically designed for bonded waterproofing installations using the manufacturer’s Hydro Ban waterproofing membrane. Featuring a low profile, the drains allows for the use of large-format tile and a single-plane slope to the drain.

If wood wall panels are too conventional for you, try Architectural Systems’ Eco-Dimensions three-dimension panels made from pressed bamboo pulp. Measuring 18 inches by 18 inches, the lightweight panels can be installed with regular adhesive and can be painted any color. Six silhouettes are available.

The manufacturer’s new Heritage Timber Edition is a line of Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood flooring that replicates the patina of reclaimed distressed barn wood. Featuring a distressed surface of scrapes, nail holes, notches, and saw kerf marks, the European white oak planks measure 7 7/16 inches wide and come in warm browns and weathered grays.

This is the world’s first manufactured hardwood flooring made with naturally curved lengths that follow a tree’s growth, the manufacturer says. As a result, the 9-foot-long, solid wood boards utilize about 20% more of each sawn plank than traditional products. Plus, the curved lines in the finished floor are dramatic. Boards measure 5 inches to 12 1/2 inches long and come in five species.
