Somerset Pool House, Chevy Chase, Md.

Somerset Pool House is a gathering place in a small incorporated town within the upscale DC Beltway community of Chevy Chase, Md.

Formerly a series of bathrooms and showers that were dank and not ADA-compliant, the the falling-down pool house, built in the 1960s, got new life.

Off-the-shelf lumber, roof trusses, and stainless steel fasteners let the building have a porch-like, airy feel. It also helped contain costs--the project actually came in under budget.

The renovated pool house has become a community hub. On a summer Saturday night, when families come to grill dinner and hang out with friends and neighbors, it's hard to nab a table.

The pool house was a renovation of an existing building. The site plan shows an environmentally sensitive site that today would have posed too many restrictions to build on.
