Quieting Noisy Ductwork

Unwanted Sound: Privacy, peace, and quiet are basic values, fundamental to the worth of any home. Rigid metal ductwork can impair those values, carrying voices between rooms or bringing the noisy sound of compressors, burners, or fans into the living space.

Flexible Terminations: Four to 6 feet of insulated flexible duct—installed between the main metal duct run and the supply register for the room—can absorb sound that is carried along the duct, muffling speech and noise.

Nonmetallic Duct Board: Metal ducts can carry machine vibrations and mechanical noise throughout the house. Where quiet is a priority, fiberglass duct board sealed with tape is a good option. It also has thermal insulating value, a factor in home energy analysis.
