Fire-Blocking for Kitchen Cabinets

1. Blocking Between Studs: Nailing short 2x blocks between the studs in the wall framing next to the cabinet soffit is the classic approach to fire-blocking a kitchen wall.

2. Framing Across the Face: A continuous piece of 2x10 or 2x12, or a piece of ¾-inch plywood, nailed across the face of the wall also can accomplish fire-blocking at this location.

3. Drywall Before Soffit: Where the job sequence permits, simply installing drywall on the kitchen wall and ceiling before framing in the soffit will meet the requirement.
