Arterra is a LEED-silver certified residential hi-rise.

Numerous sustainable materials were used on interiors, including recycled carpet, FSC-certified wood trim and doors, and low- or no-VOC paints and adhesives.

The firm wanted to attempt something "playful, in a sea of grey buildings."

The exterior is bright-white, but is accented with jolts of color.

"It doesn't cost more to do a LEED silver building," says principal Sylvia Kwan.

The jury was taken with the bold use of color on exteriors.

Arterra is clad in Trespa, a material made from craft paperand resins.

There are three attached structures of six, 10, and 16 stories.

A living roof was built on the six-story portion of the building to reduce heating and cooling costs.
