9 Web-enabled Home Devices

CertainTeed  The Solstice PV system includes rack-mounted modules available with monocrystalline or polycrystalline technology. Available in many configurations, the manufacturer says the low-profile mounting frames blend better with a home’s roof. Homeowners can view performance information from any Web-enabled device using mobile compatible software for smartphones and tablets.

GE  In addition to state-of-the-art convection cooking, GE’s latest wall ovens feature Wi-Fi connectivity. A mobile app lets users preheat the oven, set the timer, and change temperatures and cooking functions without even being in the house. Preheat the oven on your way home from work, or get notifications when your cooking time is finished while you’re working outside in the yard.

Generac Mobile Link enables users to monitor their generator’s status from a personalized Web portal or mobile app. The system is compatible with select models from the company, such as the Guardian Synergy 20kW home back-up generator (shown). The patented variable speed technology allows the engine to run only as fast as necessary, resulting in quieter, more fuel-efficient energy resource.

Heat & Glo The Mezzo series of gas fireplaces features the firm’s IntelliFire Touch Controls, which allow users operational control via Wi-Fi–enabled devices. Users can confirm the fireplace is off, engage a child-safety lock, and adjust the temperature setting, flame height, timer, and more. Three sizes—36 inch, 48 inch, and 60 inch—will be available later this year as either a single-sided or see-through fireplace.

Honeywell The first in Honeywell’s network of smart home devices under the Lyric moniker, this thermostat uses your smartphone’s location to automatically switch to the energy-saving mode when your home is empty. Other features include a proximity light that glows upon approach, a 12-hour weather forecast, and optional text notifications when someone in your family hits the proximity threshold or arrives home.

Keen Home The Smart Vent is a vent cover that can be opened or closed remotely via smartphone to redirect conditioned air away from unused rooms. The units can be scheduled to suit a homeowner’s lifestyle or set to automatically sense and adjust to a room’s temperature. Available beginning September 2014, choose from a selection of designer faceplates or use existing HVAC register covers.

Lutron  Control window treatments remotely from a keypad, remote, or smartphone with the Sivoia Quiet Electronic Drive family. The firm says the technology offers near-silent control of shades and ensures different shades all start and stop in unison and within 1/8 inch of each other. The electronic drive features a 10-year power failure memory that saves shade positions even if the system is active during a power outage.

Samsung The Big Boy laundry pair is the industry’s largest, says the company, with 5.6 cubic feet of washer capacity and 9.5 cubic feet of dryer capacity. The drums are wider than comparable models and feature a shallower depth for easier access. The units include Smart Care, which communicates through any Web-enabled device to monitor progress, set notifications, and troubleshoot issues.

Nuheat Signature is a Wi-Fi enabled programmable thermostat that’s compatible with any electric in-floor heating system that uses a 10K ohm sensor. The device offers touchscreen operation and displays floor warming features, energy use, outdoor weather information, and more. Users also can operate the thermostat or view energy use remotely via the Nuheat Signature App.
