Existing-Home Sales Hit Lowest Level Since 1989

Existing-home sales plummeted 8.4 percent from February (6,680,000 units) to March (6,120,000 units) and 11.3 percent since March 2006 according to a report released by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Tuesday. More

Existing Home Sales Rise Unexpectedly

The National Association of Realtors reported Friday that existing home sales rose 3.9% in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 6.69 million, the strongest gain since March of 2004. Coming on top of what NAR called "healthy" gains in January, the new data suggests the housing market is improving, said the NAR, although its chief economist, David Lereah, allowed that he was surprised by the gain. Still, the NAR sees the possibility of a slowdown in March. (BB News) More

Box Store Blues

According to David Lereah, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors, home buyers who choose to live near shopping and amenities may not have 40,000-square-foot box stores in mind. In fact, he says, being too close to one of these megastores can negatively impact property values. New development trends may answer this concern by camouflaging big box stores in smaller, more welcoming retail centers that mix big and small stores. More
