From the Longview News-Journal in Texas, a success story:

When Fran McDade entered the Longview workforce in 1987 after raising two daughters and two sons, she chose a field in a man's world: home building.

Now semi-retired and widowed, McDade, 78, started McDade Builders with a man as a business partner.

"I had two (male) builders give me good advice," she said.

"Education first, experience second" was the first piece of advice, McDade said. The other builder told her, "Don't expect what you can't inspect."

That means, she said, "Don't think you are going to get something until you go out and inspect it and know what you are looking at."

McDade, who was born in West, became a pioneer in the Longview home-building industry, which grew to include her daughters Chris Tisdale, 50, and Susie Scadden, 56, and other women.
