Homeowners love outdoor spaces, and buyers often desire decks attached to their homes. But when they're not properly installed, deck failures can be catastrophic, and in some cases deadly.
At the Chicago DeckExpo this past fall, Simpson Strong-Tie built two identical decks to demonstrate what happens when builders aren't vigilant about deck safety. One of the decks met code requirements, and the other didn't.
In this safety demo, Simpson Strong-Tie engineer Scott Fisher discusses the key connection points and proper installation techniques of the safe deck, and pin-points the problems with the improperly-built version before collapsing the failed deck.
