CityLab's Tanvi Misra takes a look at a new, interactive project from visual data expert Robert Kosara showing the location of every ZIP code in the United States and connecting them in ascending order.
The result is a "Scribble Map"—a jagged web that loosely mirrors the concentration of people in the United States. Dark and dense in some regions, and loose and spread-out in others, the map of "geometrical tumbleweeds" illustrates density distribution and development patterns.
"Perhaps the main thing is to appreciate the structure in ZIP codes. Most people probably never think about where they come from or why there are certain numbers in certain places. But they're all planned and structured, and surprisingly interesting to look at," said Kosara to CityLab.
