The Opportunity Project is a new open data project that is lead by the White House to make local and federal datasets sortable and available online.

Wired reporter Issie Lapowsky writes the site will have data on government job listings, crime, school programs, and much more. It will also have an app that assists families with finding housing or childcare. The idea of the project was originally initiated by President Obama.

“The president has really been focused on the idea of how do you get the force of data to benefit everyday Americans?" says Chief US Data Scientist DJ Patil. We should think of technology as neither radical nor revolutionary, unless it impacts every single person.”

“We’ve shifted into a model where people are really empowered to take control of their communities." Fostering that community, where people can come together around hackathons and other things, is extremely powerful.”
