When names were predicted for President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet few (if any) thought that he'd choose former GOP presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson as the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary. HousingWire stafffer Brena Swanson reports on this selection and the possible silver lining.

Swanson points out that in the lead-up to the election housing did not get the attention it deserved but Carson could change this. While there were more experienced candidates for this position, none had his notoriety which has the potential to start conversations about housing:

But what this does bring is a chance for people to start talking about housing in a way that hasn’t been done in a long time.

All of a sudden people have a lot of feelings about who sits at the helm of HUD. And since so little is known about Carson's thoughts on housing, there's a lot of unknowns going into this selection.
