For years researchers have been trying to find ways to make the abundant amount of glass on buildings usable space for creating energy from the sun. Now, Solaria's building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) solar windows will begin a pilot program to test how valuable this innovation could be.

The product recently underwent testing at Lawrence Berkeley's National Laboratory's FlexLab to determine its energy generation, glass performance, tenant comfort and the design-build process. Since then, it's been selected to partake in the U.S. General Services Administration Green Proving Ground (GPG) program, and will start its pilot program on a federal building in Kansas City, Missouri.

Following the successful testing GPG testing with FLEXLAB, Solaria officials anticipate performance results will show its BIPV windows offer the building and construction industries a reliable, seamless alternative to traditional glass solutions for commercial buildings.

The goal of the GSA’s GPG program is twofold. First, it enables new technologies to quickly become proven commercial products by absorbing the risk and performing rigorous testing and validation. Second, it provides incentives for building owners to become early adopters of innovative technologies that might help them achieve their energy saving goals.
