A new shipping container home has been built in Houston, but if developers Build a Box Homes has its way, it will be the first of an entire neighborhood in the Fifth Ward of the Texas city says Claudine Zap for Realtor.com. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,228-square-foot home is available for $189,995.
The developer, Build a Box Homes founder Jerry Hartless, “purchased that piece of property there just as a way to see if it’s a great idea. The whole idea is to make the home affordable but yet efficient and, in turn, better for the environment,” says listing agent Trent Draper. The hope is that the model home will spur interest for more. “If he gets more orders to build them, he’ll build them,” Draper says. “He’s bought entire blocks in the Fifth Ward of Houston.”
This model is also designed to blend in with its neighbors, and resembles a cottage complete with a front porch, peaked roof, and cheery blue hue. The open kitchen is outfitted with stainless-steel appliances, granite countertops, and laminate flooring. Decorative stacked stones cover the connections between the two containers that make up the house.
