Journal of Light Construction senior editor Ted Cushman reports that the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) is about to publish an update to its U1 standard for preservative-treated lumber.

What this means is that everybody who builds decks is on notice that by mid-summer, Cushman notes, some deck framing lumber, including posts, beams, and joists in many deck frames, will have to be treated to the AWPA's UC4A Ground Contact preservative retention levels. Already, some lumberyards are making the switch to stocking Ground Contact lumber instead of Above Ground material. But enforcement of the revised industry standard by local code officials may not happen until local codes themselves are updated.
