A new report in Nature Materials' September issue reveals a new development in window coatings.

Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin have created a new flexible window material that can help control heat and light from the sun. With a small electric charge of about four volts, the new material can easily lighten or darken its tinting to control heat, which could help families and businesses save on heating and cooling bills.

The key is the new low-temperature process that used to marry the material to a plastic. For starters, coating the new material to plastic which can than be applied to glass is cheaper and easier than coating the material directly to glass because of the high-temperature process the latter strategy requires.

The team will be conducting more studies on the material, but their findings could mean windows in every home in the next 10 years can help automatically control the heat of the sun into the home.
