Nest, maker of digitally controlled thermostats, has entered a collaboration with Amazon that will allow Amazon's Echo speaker to control Nest thermostats. Forbes staffer Aaron Tilley reports on this integration which will be done through an open API Amazon calls Alexa Connected Home Skills.
The thermostat is the second smart home device category with which Amazon has directly integrated Echo. See a related piece on Amazon's expansion of its Echo plans. This alliance further demonstrates the company's advantage over rivals in the field:
It provides a sort of “ambient intelligence” that makes it easy to interact and control devices around the home. It’s a lot simpler than most smart home devices that require the user to pull out their smartphone, unlock it and find the right app to do something as simple as turning up the temperature or switching a light on and off.
