The kitchen island brings luxury to the masses.

How can builders woo and wow move-up buyers? In a post on the NAHB Now blog, the organization revealed the must-have design features that will entice move-up buyers in 2016, based on expert tips from January’s International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.

Top hits on the list included spectacular kitchens that serve as the focal point of the home, well-designed laundry spaces, spa-like master baths with luxury showers, and home technology that stays up to date with innovations and new product releases.

Open floor plans with great rooms and outdoor spaces were also key features on the list.

“How do you make a smaller house feel larger? Break down barriers,” said Dave Kosco, senior principal and director of design at Bassenian/Lagoni Architecture in Newport Beach, Calif. People want to see from the front to the back of the house, he added.

Outdoor rooms are also replacing formal living rooms as the social space of the home, and often come with full amenities. Large glass doors make for a seamless transition from the indoors to outdoors.

“It’s all about how you manage the space. Features can be scalable and affordable,” said Dan Swift, president and CEO of BSB Design based in Des Moines.
