L.A. has never been known for being walker-friendly, but the MyFigueroa streetscape projects is making progress in changing that. Ground breaking is slated for this summer, with plans to open next March, the project will add bus-only lanes, wider sidewalks, better lighting, bus shelters, transit platforms, better traffic signals, more street signs and separate bike lanes.
The project has been under debate for nearly six years, with several groups making the case that taking room away from cars would only make L.A.'s notorious traffic problem worse. However, the project hopes to knit together center city with the Expo Park and USC areas by making room for cars closer to the Convention Center.
The project is being funded by a Propisition 1C grant that mandates work must finish by March 2017.
