Fast Company's Jessica Leber takes a closer look at the affordable housing crisis in New York, which has remained a hot topic in the city since 1965.

One one end of the debate are those who value New York neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village and Brooklyn Heights for their original character and vitality.

On the other, the only real solution to the affordable housing crisis, advocates say, is to build more, denser, and taller housing—and historic districts have become too large a barrier to doing this.
