The Orange County (Calif.) Register staffer Jeff Collins sifts through yesterday's latest S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index that shows local house prices have risen steadily for more than three years as of August.

The Index showed that home prices in Los Angeles and Orange counties grew 6.2% in August, the seventh-highest gain in the nation:

The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index ... was the latest of four key market trackers showing that home prices continued their upward climb for a 40th straight month in August.

San Francisco and Denver had the highest gains among the 20 cities with price increases of 10.7%, Case-Shiller reported. The National Home Price Index had a year-over-year gain of 4.7%.
